List of 27 Local Governments in Imo State and their Headquarters.

Imo State is among the 36 states in Nigeria, It is named after the Imo River and it is popularly called “Eastern Heartland” or “Heartland of Eastern Nigeria”. It was created on 3 February 1976 out of the old East Central State by the then regime of General Murtala Mohammed. Thou, Part of it was split off in 1991 as Abia State, and another part became Ebonyi State. Imo State is bordered by Abia State on the East, River Niger and Delta State to the West, Anambra State on the North and Rivers State to the South.

Imo State has the largest palm plantation complex in West Africa. It has a total land area of about 5,288 Km2.

There are 27 Local Government Areas in Imo state which are Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise, Ehime Mbano, Ezinihite-Mbaise, Ideato North, Ideato South, Ihitte/Uboma, Ikeduru, Isiala Mbano, Isu, Mbaitoli, Ngor-Okpala, Njaba, Nkwerre, Nwangele, Obowo, Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema, Okigwe, Onuimo, Orlu, Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, Owerri Municipal, Owerri North, Owerri West.
