Sokoto state is one of the 36 states in Nigeria that is popularly called the “Seat of the Caliphate”. It is located in the Northwestern region of Nigeria. Sokoto state was created on 3 February 1976. It shares its borders with Niger Republic to the North, Katsina State to the East, Zamfara State to the Southeast, Kebbi State to the South and Benin Republic to the West.
Sokoto state has 23 Local Government Areas which are Binji, Bodinga, Dange-shnsi, Gada, Goronyo, Gudu, Gawabawa, Illela, Isa, Kware, Kebbi, Rabah, Sabon Birnin, Shagari, Silame, Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Tambuwal, Tangaza, Tureta, Wamako, Wurno, Yabo.
Sokoto state was founded as a ribat (military camp or frontier) in 1809, when Shehu Usmanu was at Sifawa. It is a veritable center of Islamic learning and jurisprudence and has the largest limestone reserves in Africa. Sokoto State has a total land area of about 27,825 Km2.
