Plateau State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria that is popularly known as the “Home of Peace and Tourism”. Plateau State was created on 3 February 1976 from the old Benue-Plateau State. However, Plateau State was further subdivided to create Nasarawa State in 1996, which was carved out of the western half of Plateau State by Late General Sani Abacha’s military regime.
It is named after the picturesque Jos Plateau, (a mountainous area in the north of the state with captivating rock formations). It is adjacent to Bauchi State to the Northeast, Kaduna to the Northwest, Nasarawa State to the South West, and Taraba State to the South East. Plateau State Capital is Jos and Plateau State has a total land area of about 27,147 Km2. Plateau State is located in the North Central Zone of Nigeria.
There are 17 Local Government Areas in Plateau State which are Jos North, Jos South, Jos East, Bassa, Kanam, Barakin Ladi, Quai’an-Pam, Wase, Langtang North, Langtang South, Pankshin, Shendam, Riyom, Mikang, Kanke, Mangu and Bokkos.
