It is high time you have been hearing the word NGO, but many people do not know the full meaning of the acronym talking more of knowing the meaning or even the function of the text.

In this post we shall be discussing the meaning of NGO and also its functions, as well as the List of NGOs in Nigeria.

First of all looking at the meaning of NGO, it is an acronym representing the “Non-governmental Organization”.

Now emphasizing on the connotative meaning of NGO, A non-governmental organization (NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary citizens’ group which is organized on a local, national or international is generally established to engage in not for-profit activities (that is to say, it was not established for profit-making).

It is Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGO perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to Governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision of information.

List of NGOs in Nigeria


Some are organized around specific issues, such as:

  • human rights
  • environment or health
  • develop communities
  • encourage social responsibility
  • Micro finance
  • promote education
  • agricultural development
  • supporting human welfare
  • Support the poor and so on.

Moreover, the function of an NGO may be grounded in other areas, such as protecting the environment and promoting animal welfare.

In Nigeria, there are local NGOs and International Non-governmental Organizations.

They provide analysis and expertise, serve as early warning mechanisms and help monitor and implement international agreements. Their relationship with offices and agencies of the United Nations (UN) system varies depending on their goals, their venue and the mandate of a particular institution.
